Have you ever heard about the magic of gratitude? It’s something every motivational speaker and spiritual guru loves to talk about. They’ll tell you it’s a simple act that can transform your life.

But here’s the big question: if it’s so simple, why do so many of us struggle to practice it consistently? Well... maybe, in a world enamored by complexity, gratitude seems too basic to hold our attention. Yes, I get it. I won't deny, I used to think the same way too.

I’d heard about gratitude as a religious practice since I was a little girl. And at the time, for me, it was just words. I mean... I knew the meaning and I believed in its power (at least in theory) but never gave much thought about it. Even when praying, my “thank you’s” felt robotic, more of a routine than a genuine expression from the heart.

Back then, of course I did say thanks, but it was more of a common social courtesy, not as a personal practice to thank myself, my life, or my sorroundings. I never consciously thanked my body for carrying me through each day or expressed heartfelt gratitude to life itself. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know about that concept that I found ridiculous when I heard about it the first time.

Then, everything changed when I read The True Power of Water by Dr. Masaru Emoto many years ago. His experiments left me in awe even until today.

If you haven’t read it, here’s a little sneak peek. Dr. Emoto studied how words and intentions could influence the structure of water crystals and even cooked rice. Positive affirmations produced stunningly beautiful crystals, while negative words created disarray and chaos.

As I was observing the pictures in that book about how water crystals and cooked rice transform, I couldn’t stop being in awe. So, they are actually alive? I couldn’t help myself but wonder. It was seriously mind-blowing!

That book was a wake-up call for me. It showed me that energy is real and doesn’t lie. And the truth is, everything around us is energy, constantly interacting and influencing one another.

Marie Kondo’s teachings suddenly made perfect sense, too. You’ve probably heard of this renowned organizing guru’s ritual before she begins her work where she “greets” homes on her knees, hips on her heels, head bowed, eyes closed, in dignified silence. Then, she invites her clients to picture a vision about their house as a way to communicate to the house.

To outsiders, it might look a little eccentric or even superstitious. But her method, including “thanking” objects for their service before discarding them (as strange as it seems to some) is deeply aligned with the idea that everything carries energy.

Inspired by all these concepts, I decided to try gratitude on a deeper level. I started small, by thanking my water before drinking it and appreciating its life-giving energy. When I showered, I made it a practice to thank the water for cleansing and refreshing me. I even spoke gratitude to my surroundings, whether it was my cozy couch or the laptop I use daily. It felt weird at first, but I kept at it.

At the time, I didn’t know that I was also practicing being mindful, being in the here and now (I haven’t learned that concept). But all I remembered, a few weeks later, something magical happened. And by magical, I mean something that almost felt like a miracle. It’s hard to put into words, but a series of events unfolded in my life that were too serendipitous to be coincidence. They reaffirmed what I’d learned: gratitude isn’t just a nicety; it’s a powerful force that connects you with the flow of life.

Well, I totally understand if maybe you’re skeptical, or maybe you feel like you’ve tried practicing gratitude before, and it felt like it didn’t “work.” But here’s the thing: gratitude isn’t about ticking a box or reciting empty words. It’s about connecting deeply with the things that nourish your soul and appreciating them with intentionality. Whether it’s saying thank you to the water in your glass, the sun shining through your window, or the people who make your life richer, each moment of gratitude strengthens your relationship with life itself.

So, if you’re still on the fence, consider this your invitation. Start small. Take a few seconds before drinking water or eating a meal to thank it for nourishing you. Appreciate your bed for giving you rest. Thank your phone for keeping you connected. Lean into the process and see what changes in your life.

Gratitude may be simple, but it holds a profound power to transform our lives if we let it. And maybe your own moment of magic could be just around the corner.
